Artist Statement
Branka Rosie Cavar’s artistic practice is informed by her lived experiences with mental health and wellness. Relevant themes in her practice include but are not limited to, art as therapy, discovery, recovery, and transformation. Her work is not only a celebration of the complexities of human life and the stories that she has collected, but a reflection on the benefits of art as a therapeutic and spiritual practice. Branka’s greatest hope is that her work will put a spotlight on mental illnesses less commonly discussed, to build awareness of their existence as a whole, and ultimately, to foster an environment of empathy.
January
January is a synthesis of the thoughts, emotions, and colours I associate with the memory of a traumatic experience. While this work acts as a glimpse into the reality of my disillusionment and psychosis following the trauma, it is a visual reminder of my resilience. Transformation is a key theme in my work, such as the transformation of shame and regret into strength and courage. My greatest hope is that this painting will allow my audience to enter my inner world and escape from reality, just for a brief moment, and recognize the beauty and fragility of life. The truth is, life is weird, but it is also beautifully complex and I am grateful to share this piece with you all.
