Demitra Selimos

Knot in Time, Acrylic on Canvas, 16”x 20”, 2023

Knot in Time

This piece captures the profound and devasting effect of Alzheimer’s disease on an individual’s memories and thus, their identity. This portrait was inspired by a patient who related their struggle with Alzheimer’s disease as a perpetual knot in their mind, entangling their past with the present. Using a combination of bold and muted colours, I sought to convey the confusion and disorientation that often accompanies dementia. The sporadic placement of cherished recollections further illustrates the fragmented nature of one’s mind as the disease gradually takes hold.

Artist Biography

Utilizing surrealism, Demitra Selimos, a second-year biomedical sciences student, paints the manifestations of cognitive disease and mental illness. Shedding light on the complexities of human emotion, which cannot be expressed tangibly, she demonstrates the need for art as an expressive outlet. Her art focuses on juxtaposing serenity and chaotic symbolism to remind viewers of the universal fragility and vulnerability that unite us.

Artist statement

Through my studies as a biomedical sciences student, I have gained a deep understanding of the scientific aspects of cognitive disease and mental illness, prompting me to convey the emotional and personal experiences of those affected by them through my art. I aim to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and lived experience by portraying the human side of these conditions through portraiture, drawing inspiration from surrealist artists such as René Magritte.

How did you start your art practice?

Viewing the impactful artwork created by my older sister, who is also showcased in this exhibition, inspired me to produce meaningful pieces. Learning the unique struggles of diverse patients as a volunteer in the hospital, alongside my passion for medicine, spurred me to create artwork that reflects the complexity yet universality of ailments of the mind to promote empathy and understanding.
