Heartstrings to Homestead
Heartstrings to Homestead comments on the interplay between academic pursuits and the inherent tug of pastoral origins. A laptop with a tranquil scene juxtaposes elements of scholarly work to showcase that no matter how far the pursuit may take an individual, they are perpetually connected to their beginnings.
Artist statement
Through my studies as a Biomedical Sciences student, I have gained a deep understanding of the scientific aspects of cognitive disease and mental illness, prompting me to convey the emotional and personal experiences of those affected by them through my art. I aim to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and lived experience by portraying the human side of these conditions through portraiture, drawing inspiration from surrealist artists such as René Magritte.
Artist’s biography
Utilizing surrealism, Demitra Selimos, a third-year biomedical sciences student, paints the manifestations of cognitive disease and mental illness. Shedding light on the complexities of human emotion, which cannot be expressed tangibly, she demonstrates the need for art as an expressive outlet. Her art focuses on juxtaposing serenity and chaotic symbolism to remind viewers of the universal fragility and vulnerability that unite us.
