Demitra Selimos
Petals of the Past
This piece reflects the complex layers of knowledge that emerge through the journey of illness. Just as symptoms gradually bloom, understanding grows from fragmented insights, eventually forming a diagnosis. Health is rarely straightforward; instead, it unfolds through slow, organic discoveries that reveal both the beauty and challenges of comprehending the human body.
Artist’s Statement
I was inspired to pursue art by my older sister who completed dual-bachelor’s degrees in fine arts and education. Her continual dedication in constructing meaningful art pieces has influenced my artistic practice. It is through her example that I strive to construct pieces that comment on paramount topics such as mental health.

Unfolding Understanding
This piece captures the devastating erosion of memory caused by Alzheimer’s disease. Flowers, often given by loved ones for comfort, become paradoxical symbols—once vibrant reminders of connection, they now reflect the fragile nature of memory itself. Embedded within the petals are cherished memories, slowly slipping away. As time passes, much like the changing seasons, these memories fade, giving way to an uncertain future
