Fiore Mitchell
Artist’s Statement
My work interacts with fairy tale and whimsical imagery, utilizing these archaic themes for satire and to spark nostalgia, a sense of fleeting. My sculpture work explores these same themes but from the context of the human body and mortality, portraying pieces of the body as mere objects to critique how the human body is seen and discussed in social and political realms.
Significance of Self
A pile of plaster casts of my teeth, arranged in various ways as they are not adhered together. An exploration of identity through the replication of a piece of oneself.
About the Artist
I am a Calgary-born artist with a love for the outdoors, florals and all things classical literature and folklore. I am studying art history, with the end goal of pursuing my doctorate in the same field. I find joy in both creating art and studying it, and I have been experimenting with a variety of different mediums since I was a kid. My artwork uses, for the most part, coloured pencil, pastel and oil paint but I sometimes dabble in sculpture, block printing and illustrative work. I am always wanting to try something new.
