artist statement

My prints are based on traditional embroidery patterns from the Abruzzi region in Italy where I am from. Presenting embroidery patterns in various printmaking processes allows me to recontextualize them as exhibited art rather than as decoration on functional items. It also gives me the opportunity to show the patterns larger than they would typically be on fabrics, highlighting the intricate nature of the designs and images. The photographs show family members who practiced this style of embroidery, and who passed on the skills and passion to make creative works with textiles. I used linocut, silkscreen, and intaglio print processes to depict stylized embroidery patterns combined with family photos and hand drawn elements. I am suggesting that traditions are shared and passed through generations by virtue of creating and making things together.

Artist biography

My family emigrated to Calgary when I was young, and I have lived here ever since. My roots are in Italy and Calgary is my home. This has led to a dual self-identity where I feel that I belong in two places, and often shows up in my creative practice.

I am working towards a BFA in Visual Studies at the University of Calgary after a career in the public sector. Making art has been a passion throughout my life that continues to be a large part of living my best creative life.
