Jemmie Ponting
Artist Statement
My name is Jemmie Ponting and I am a painter who began making art right before COVID19. During quarantine, I focused on my craftsmanship and experimented on various 2D mediums, from charcoal to oil painting. Eventually, I developed a van gogh-esque technique that allowed me to playfully recreate the mundane still-life objects of consumerism. Making the boring not so boring. With this, I paint product labels, popular brands, and iconographies found while taking a walk in the park, using painterly techniques done by artists like Van Gogh, Claude Monet (and Manet), Cy Twombly and Basquiat. Creating a visual chaos of the 21st century humdrum lifestyle.
About Artwork
My friends and I went to the park to lay on the grass and enjoy the sun. 20 minutes in, we got thirsty and sleepy so we decided to get some iced coffee. Unfortunately, the nearest coffeeshop was a 45 minute walk and the closest place we could get a cold beverage was the gas station - so to the gas station we went. By the time we got there we didn't want to get iced coffee anymore, instead we bought Sugar free Redbull because we heard it taste like candy. After paying, we then went to a different park speckled with yellow dandelions and enjoyed ourselves some cold sugar free energy drink.
