A Challenging Year

It is no secret that food prices have been rapidly increasing leaving consumers to wonder how they can afford this necessity. The term ‘greedflation’ has become part of the Canadian consumers vocabulary while grocers simply state that it has been “a challenging year” for Canadians. What was once affordable on minimum wage no longer is as each pillow represents the cost of basic items at the respective minimum wage, one depicts 2013 and the other 2023. This work is a visual analysis of how Canadian food inflation is affecting everyone, now the question is, what will we do about it?

 

Artist Biography

While raised in a very creative family, it was not until Jordyn was in a high school art class that she realized her interest in crafting would develop into a love for art. With the help of a very encouraging art teacher and supportive family, she began experimenting with different mediums, techniques and topics. Her practice has always been influenced by humour and pop art, whether it is a blunt depiction of reality or a fanciful escape from it.

 

Artist Statement

Currently Jordyn’s art practice is heavily influenced by food. Finding this subject meaningful as everyone requires food, her practice uses this subject to explore culture, class, society, economics, the natural and unnatural, all pertaining to food. Having worked with a variety of mediums pertaining to this subject, Jordyn’s more recent use of textiles uses her love of juxtaposition to create visually stimulating works, regardless of how conventionally appealing it is.

 

How did you start your art practice?

Utilizing a variety of mediums, techniques and subjects throughout her practice she needed a constant theme in developing her style. Having always valued humour, Jordyn began to realize that incorporating it into her work would be a strength in appealing to her audience. Regardless of the topic she finds a way to deliver the message in a lighthearted tone, making it easier to digest. Seeking joy in all situations is reflected in her art practice.
