I created this copper etching print to depict the character of the crow in Indigenous storytelling, who is a troublemaker/mischievous creature. However the crow also is a figure of wisdom and divine knowledge, which is represented by “the fool” tarot card, signifying new beginnings and trusting in the universe. Though the crow is clumsy, just like the jester commonly depicted in this tarot card, he holds knowledge and enlightenment, symbolized by the sun he gazes up at. I chose red for the sun as it symbolizes to the connection to the land Indigenous people have. Overall, this piece is a way to honour the tradition of Indigenous storytelling through my art.
