Mik Gohring

[she/her]

BFA Visual Studies, 2nd year

Mik is a Calgary-based visual artist working primarily in oil paint and mixed media. Her work explores themes of abandonment and memory through simplified compositions and dramatic lighting inspired by Baroque tenebrism. She often focuses on everyday objects, such as board games, to suggest past use and passion. By isolating familiar objects in dark, minimal environments, Mik aims to evoke a sense of neglect and passage of time. Mik is currently studying Visual Studies at the University of Calgary with a minor in Japanese in hopes to integrate various art practices into her work.

Checkmate is the first artwork in a series of chess paintings. The piece captures defeat and victory through use of symbolism between the subject, as well as the compositional techniques. Heavily inspired by the drama conveyed on baroque art, as well as tenebrism, this painting was constructed purposefully in all regards. The atmospheric and linear perspective incorporated into the chessboard offers a unique sense of tranquility and focus—much like the state chess players enter when playing the game. Chess is rich in symbolism in relation to the pieces themselves, as well as the moves. Creating a narrative between the pieces is simple yet powerful.
