ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Abeer just completed her fourth year of Health Sciences, majoring in Biomedical Sciences with a minor in Visual Studies and Art History. As an artist, she uses her creative expression as a lens to explore her Pakistani identity and global issues. Beyond the canvas, she advocates for various communities by facilitating art workshops for individuals living with disabilities, immigrant and refugee youth, seniors, and paediatric patients in hospitals. She also currently contributes to quantitative and qualitative research at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and the Alberta Children’s Hospital.
INTERSECTIONAL IDENTITY
Intersectional Identity merges scientific discovery with artistic exploration. It combines text from the artist’s scientific thesis manuscript with medical images and figures from textbooks, alongside elements from art magazines. This collage reflects the intersection of the artist's identity, bridging the analytical depth of science with the creative expression of art. Through dynamic juxtaposition, it invites viewers to contemplate the intricate connections between these realms and the richness found at their intersection.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Abeer's interdisciplinary practice is rooted in her dedication to the Biomedical Sciences and her passion for Visual Arts. She delves into her Pakistani identity as an artist and scientist while engaging with global issues surrounding discrimination. Her paintings and drawings dissect societal complexities and aim to invoke dialogue and introspection. Themes of social justice and inclusivity are interwoven in her work, shedding light on the nuances of belonging and displacement. She seeks to bridge art and science through embracing interdisciplinary collaboration, fostering innovation and a deeper understanding of both disciplines.
