Nirmal Cheema

Spectral Reflections, 2023

18" x 24"; Oil on Canvas

spectral reflections

Spectral Reflections explores identity and cultural heritage through symbolism and introspection. The elephant sculpture, represents the traditions of my heritage, while the mirror introduces a sense of self-reflection. The monochrome approach and subtle composition convey how cultural identity can feel both present and distant, like a quiet yet constant force shaping who I am. This piece reflects the duality of living in the present while carrying the weight of the past, blending personal and ancestral narratives.

artist statement

My name is Nirmal Cheema. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor’s in Science with a major in Biological Sciences at the University of Calgary. I grew up in India and moved to Canada at the age of 14, which allows me to draw commonalities among human experiences across the globe.

My artistic expression includes painting isolated figures in a monochromatic and realistic manner, with oil paint on canvas. I explore negative emotions, such as pain, anger, and loneliness, which are often challenging to express verbally. I hope to create a space where individuals feel seen, understood, and safe to embrace the full spectrum of human emotions.
