Peyton Wong

Surf and Turf
Surf and Turf is a study on shrimp and their importance to oceanic and continental ecosystems. This print speak on my appreciation of shrimp and what they’ve done for our ecosystems. The work shows a shrimp swimming by some plants which are interpreted to be a species of tallgrass. I want to showcase both these details as a representation of the ocean’s importance to the prairies. My editions of Surf and Turf begin to focus on the shrimp’s deep sea environment. The plate tones in Surf and Turf creates detail in the shrimp’s shell and shadows in the tall grasses below.

Artist statement
My work incorporates elements of naturalism and story-telling. Lately I've been inspired by my daily life and I project these experiences through my practice. I tend to seek joy and peace in moments that may feel melancholy, such as commuting. I'm also inspired by natural in its smallest details, such as thinking about our connections with non-human species.
How did you start your art practice?
I've always been practicing art since my childhood, but started taking it more professionally in high school and post secondary. My work originally started by creating art of popular media that I enjoyed such as video games, tv shows, etc. My art practice nowadays creates a conversation to how I first got interested in art and what I thrive from it.
