Prey
This piece was highly experimental, using a combination of spray paint, acrylic, paint markers, and felt markers to complete the work and convey a message based on being perceived as an object to be used rather than a human with free will.
Artist Biography
I am a twenty-one-year-old native Calgarian, artist, and student who currently attends the University of Calgary in the Fine Arts Program. Art in all of its forms has been a major part of my self-expression for most of my life, beginning with the practice of ballet and other forms of dance from a young age. My mother introduced me to visual art from an early developmental stage, and I have been creating art ever since. Having a background in sociological research further informs the motifs of many of my pieces; thus, I speak directly to society when I create art, whether it is a conscious choice or not.
Artist Statement
I believe art should leave clues of the creator’s psyche behind to be criticized and digested by the viewer. I see art as an expressive, didactic tool that can be utilized to peer into select moments of consciousness. Further, I subscribe to the thinking that pieces should remain highly subjective to allow the reader’s experiences to meld with those of the artist; the artist truly has no control over how their pieces will be viewed and should not try to control this. Thus, I am deeply inspired by abstract and non-objective styles of art that involve a large array of colours, textures, patterns, and shapes. Alone, these styles lack distinctiveness and seem easily replicable; to offset this, I find it intriguing to combine the abstract, expressionist style colours and shapes with realistic drawn images.
