Hanging Tough, Acrylic on canvas, 24x36, 2022

Hanging Tough

Through this piece, I wanted to convey the intensity and playfulness of the rodeo, which is a core part of Calgary's culture and spirit. The work aims to show an adrenaline rush: the feeling of not knowing when you'll be thrown off. Through this painting, I hope to convey the courage, resilience, and tenacity required to face life's challenges head-on.

Artist Biography

I am an artist based in Calgary, Alberta, with a passion for exploring the intersection between art and science. After developing a keen interest in the workings of the brain, I pursued a degree in neuroscience at the University of Calgary, while also feeding my love for painting by completing a minor in visual studies and art history. My education in both fields has allowed me to bring a unique perspective to my art practice, and often draw inspiration from the natural world and the human form.

Artist statement

Since I was young, I have been keenly interested in how nature and the human body can be used to represent abstract emotions and the mind. I enjoy incorporating aspects of human anatomy, surrealism and realism in my work to create something unique and thought-provoking. I am fascinated by the intricacies of the human body and how it can express complex emotions and ideas. I also believe that art should not just be aesthetically pleasing but should challenge the viewer to think and feel deeply.

How did you start your art practice?

I started my art practice at a young age, always drawn to the act of creating and expressing myself through art. As a painter working primarily in acrylic, I have honed my skills and techniques through practice and experimentation. The fast-drying nature of acrylics allowed me to work quickly and spontaneously, while the versatility of the medium allowed me to experiment with different textures, effects, and mediums.
