The painting is long and is reminiscent of a sidewalk, railway tracks, and skyscrapers. It is a shape which evokes cityscape imagery and therefore helps reinforce the atmosphere downtown. There is a sense of hopelessness in this motif, but also an idea of growth and resilience. It is a symbol of togetherness, even through the murky weather and cold snaps. It holds ambition and a yearning for something better.

 

Artist Biography

Tommy is a multimedia artist interested in exploring as many media and genres within their work. They will soon complete their BFA and start their Bachelor of Education in the upcoming fall. They hope to teach art within Alberta and continue to explore painting, drawing, and printmaking. Their work relies heavily on the process and exploration of materials.

 

Artist statement

Within their work, Tommy wishes to continue to explore and learn new mediums and techniques. This influences their own understanding of self and perception of life around them. Tommy engages in themes of community, gender, spirituality, and body within their practice. Through their work, they develop a deeper sense of self and understanding of who they wish to be.

 

How did you start your art practice?

As a teenager, Tommy was engaged in mainly realistic drawings and still life works. It wasn’t until university which they wanted to deeply explore their sense of self and identity in a way that wasn’t as surface level as their past work. The development of different materials and mediums was just a natural expansion of their conceptual evolvement in their practice.
