Sit Still

Sit Still is a piece full of experimentation. In bringing together found objects, including a clock and a candelabra, I was able to create a cohesive object which identifies its own story. This piece explores the meaning of time and how its persistence in our lives can take control of us. The entrancement of the clock hand’s continuous ticking is alluring, but what would happen if it suddenly stopped?

Artist Biography

I am a first year student at the University of Calgary pursuing a concurrent BEd and BFA. My whole life I have felt connected to art through many different forms, recently exploring different mediums and approaches. Through my practice, and in pursuing visual studies, I have come to understand the beauty in our daily lives that is created through art. This has inspired me as an artist to explore the ways in which I can inspire and connect with others, along with what our world has to offer.

Artist statement

Through my art practice, I am constantly inspired by the world and people around me. I love to be present with fine moments in life, like the way the light casts shadows, people you pass walking down the street, an insect that lands on your arm, emotions that build up inside, or even the desire to make a mess and try something new. Life in general holds great variety, and being able to focus even on one aspect at a time, influences me to continue to create and challenge myself.

How did you start your art practice?

I started my art practice as a child, encouraged by those around me to explore creativity. As I progressed through school I gained opportunities to work with several mediums, and learn new techniques. I became fascinated with the endless ways of expressing myself. The support I’ve received from my family, friends, and teachers along the way continues to be a great influence in my life and as I pursue my degree, I too hope to one day provide students with the same encouragement that led me to pursue art.
