Illumination

Illumination is an oil painting which was created using wet on wet. Colours were laid down with a synthetic brush and blended with a hog hair brush while wet. When creating this piece, I was inspired by the colourful light in my room and wanted to challenge myself by including unrealistic colours in my portrait. I wanted to portray myself basking in this warm light while also being contrasted by the coldness of the shadows on my left side. When deciding who the subject of my painting should be, I realized that I have never created a self-portrait, so I took this opportunity to do so.

Words of the artist

Despite 'Illumination' being a highly representational piece, I actually prefer to create more conceptual works that aim to make the viewer uncomfortable and scared.
