Artist Biography
Victoria is a Calgary-based artist in her third year of Visual Studies at the University of Calgary. Although Victoria typically works with acrylic and oil paint, she also enjoys experimenting with various mediums and materials. She has worked with collage, photography, music, theatre, printmaking, pastels, pencil crayons, ink, chalk, and many more. Victoria has yet to try performance, video, and street art. Recently, Victoria has been experimenting with painting with knives, making her own paint and pigments, and conceptual art.
Artist statement
Victoria Czyz is an exploratory artist who makes art about topics that are meaningful to society and herself. The reason for Victoria's artmaking is the desire to make art which is impactful, confrontational, and thought-provoking. Within her practice, Andres Serrano has significantly inspired Victoria’s work. She enjoys Serrano’s ability to bring awareness to contemporary issues by making viewers directly confront said issues. Victoria strives to be as aggressive as Serrano is in his works. She is an artist who wants to make a difference.
How did you start your art practice?
Victoria began her art practice in elementary school when her mother signed her up for various after school programs where she learned how to draw and paint. From there, Victoria has continued to learn new techniques and skills.
