Fishing Nets

In this painting, I wanted to capture the desperate moment when a poor salmon has been caught in the fishing nets and tries to escape. I depicted the main subject, salmon, as detailed and realistic as possible and abstracted the background fishing nets by adding various colors, like pink, dark red, blue, yellow, and green, in layers and adding designs on the canvas. When any fish, including salmon, has been captured in the human’s net, the only fate awaiting is their death. Thus, I wanted to depict those desperate emotions and hopeless moments using the salmon’s perspective.

ARTIST iNSPIRATION

Art is the only mechanism allowing individuals to freely speak their words in a visual context. When I first immigrated to Canada, I had no choice but to remain silent in front of people due to the language and cultural barrier between them and myself. Thus, my refuge to escape from those stressful places was by looking at famous artworks in the book or online. I was not able to read their background story, but just looking at their image of work was the only moment I enjoyed and allowed me to build up my interest in art.
