Preparator's Snake

For this artwork I collaborated with another artist but I have no idea who that is and I don't even know what the artwork's going to look like until I see it in the exhibition. The other artist receives the board and chain from me, and arranges the chain on the board however they want: they can make a line drawing, calligraphy, throw the chain at the board and see how it lands, or not put it up at all. The other artist is the preparator, or whoever sets up the exhibition, guided by my lack of installation instructions.

Artist Biography

Yaiza Lopez Garcia San Roman is a visual artist, musician, and filmmaker. As a visual artist, she works across many mediums since she lets her ideas decide the tools, but this year her favourite software is Blender. Most of her works push the limits of what is considered art by boiling down each medium or pretending that social media is the ultimate art museum, although she’ll occasionally make more traditional works around themes like the environment, consumerism, or mestizaje, when she remembers that she's half Spanish and half Mexican.

Artist statement

My phone is full of photos of empty bike racks and sandwiches with jalapeños that were accidentally arranged in a visually pleasing way. I find artistic intent in the ordinary, although my work revolves around defining “artistic intent” and “ordinary”. An important objective of my art is to bring the pretentious artistic world to the “average person”. I hope to ease unsuspecting viewers into big questions using minimalistic ideas and statements. Each of my artworks says one of two things (you decide): we need to take art more seriously or we need to stop taking art so seriously.

How did you start your art practice?

My parents are architects who love going to museums and traveling and would always make sure I had a sketchbook to document these activities, so I've practiced drawing since I was little. The amount of religious motifs in my 4 year old drawings is unbelievable. After that, I got a phone in my teen years, like everyone else, and started taking photos, like everyone else. Then I put "artist" in my bio, like everyone else.
